Research Focus

Understanding how leaders develop their leadership through experience and improve their decision-making capacity in complex environments.

Positioning

Stéphane Lelong’s work is situated within the field of leadership development.

His research aims to better understand the processes through which leaders and managers learn from experience, develop their leadership capacities, and make decisions in contexts characterized by uncertainty and complexity.

At the heart of this research lies a central question:

How do leaders develop their leadership through experience in contexts characterized by complexity and uncertainty?

Biography

Stéphane Lelong is a researcher and lecturer in Management Sciences at Université Paris Dauphine – PSL.

After more than thirty years of experience as a senior executive in the real estate, hospitality, and finance sectors, his current research focuses on leadership development, learning from experience, and decision-making in complex contexts.

He develops the Reflective Leadership Research Initiative, a research program devoted to the role of reflective processes in leadership development.

His activities are situated at the intersection of:

  • academic research
  • university teaching
  • dialogue with leaders
  • Executive Education

Research Orientation

His research is based on the idea that leadership does not develop solely through the accumulation of experience, but through the way experience is interpreted, understood, and transformed into learning.

It examines the processes through which managers:

  • make sense of their experience
  • develop their understanding of complex situations
  • learn from their actions
  • strengthen their leadership capacity
  • improve their decisions

Scientific Contribution

A central contribution of his work consists in conceptualizing, measuring, and empirically validating Reflective Leadership Capacity.

This capacity refers to an individual’s ability to mobilize different reflective resources in an integrated way in order to interpret experience, learn from it, and develop leadership.

The research aims to better understand the role of this capacity in leadership development and decision-making in complex contexts.

Doctoral Research

Stéphane Lelong is conducting doctoral research at Université Paris Dauphine – PSL on the conceptualization and validation of a measurement scale of Reflective Leadership Capacity.

This research aims to better understand the reflective capacities involved in learning from experience and their contribution to leadership development.

Vision

Stéphane Lelong’s work aims to contribute to the development of knowledge on the mechanisms through which individuals develop their leadership through experience.

It seeks to articulate:

  • theoretical conceptualization
  • empirical measurement
  • applied research
  • pedagogical approaches
  • dialogue with practitioners

with a shared objective:

to better understand how experience can become a source of learning, leadership development, and improved decision-making in complex contexts.
